The Rogue Element returns (did he ever really leave us?) with a blistering masterpiece ‘Mistakes’.

Mr Element aka Ben Medcalf to his friends and family is the king of style-blending, genre-jumping music. His most recent long player - the amazingly diverse ‘Lumina’ - was a masterclass in the art of the ( electronically ) possible and ‘Mistakes’ shows us yet another side to Rogue’s chameleonic (if that’s a word? if it isn’t it damn well should be) personality.

We let Cassette Jam get their mitts on the parts to great effect. The resulting gritty mix has just a hint of insanity about it, we suspect its something they put I the water up there, but in any event it’s well worth your attention. The Leeds-based outfit were propelled onto the Global Dance scene after winning the Cream International Search for a DJ Comp in 2006. Since when they’ve been laying down remixes for the likes of Alex Gopher, Ladytron, The Whip & Does It Offend You Yeah? The Cassette Jam fan club includes major players like Erol Alkan, Annie Mac & Eddy Temple Morris.

For those of you who haven’t caught it yet, the original album version starts gently with a guitarlike synth riff filling out with floating harmonized vocoder vocals, like a sun-drenched, hippy afternoon of the new decade. Simple but effective electro-drums, toy keyboards and the usual blips and beats speak of burning up in the sun, liberation, and the world being just too bright to take. More akin to Maps, Hot Chip, MGMT and LCD Soundsystem than anything else this shows Rogue at his songwriting best.

So Mistakes then, could well be another classic in the making. Amazing what you can do with a computer, the occasional cowbell and a whole heap of talent isn’t it ?
