Featuring the combined vocal talents of the delicious Della and musical wizard James Millman, Baqua follow up the off-kilter combination of downtempo blues and up tempo electronica showcased on their Terrapin Blues EP. The result is When I Look Back - a killer mash-up of electronics and urban, an eclectic selection featuring some of the best bits from both genres, whilst avoiding the clichés of either. The end result is a fine piece of music bursting with urgent beats and rhythms...
Sitting in the remix driving seat we have Simbad, who turns up the dance floor heat to delivered a juiced up remix. Simbad is of course a well known musician and DJ about town - signed to the highly respected Swedish nu-soul stable Raw Fusion, his characteristic sound is a concoction of soul, nu-jazz and club rhythms. Baqua are certainly in fine company, with Mr Simbad having produced with the likes of Bugz In The Attic, Robert Owens and Ron Trent, with Gilles Peterson and BBC 1xtra’s Benji B having championed his anthemic single Soul Fever.
Baqua are based in Barnstaple and have risen from the ashes of the late lamented Bluprint, who delivered two albums full of downtempo masterpieces before deciding to go their separate ways. Using the Bluprint influence as their starting point, Baqua have moved on to a much wider musical palette subtly combining elements of blues, soul, electronics, nu jazz and broken beats - coming up with a delightfully different brew which refreshes the parts other musicians can’t reach.
