Culprit 1

Culprit 1 creates beat-fuelled symphonies that take influence from legends such as DJ Shadow, The Prodigy, Orbital, and The Chemical Brothers to create a new blueprint for 21st century electronica. Culp’s unusual arrangements and three-minute sampladelic symphonies have won praise across the entire musical spectrum. Expect to hear dramatic drums, colossal synths and arresting vocals.

Radio support has come from Zane Lowe, Steve Lamacq, Colin Murray, Eddy Temple-Morris, Annie Mac, Huw Stevens and the USA’s leading dance music show Soundfront Underground. In fact, Huw was so enamoured by Culprit 1’s early demos that he released the debut single What I Use on his burgeoning Boobytrap label back in July 2003. Although seemingly odd that an electronic act was picked up by a label more likely to be promoting guitar bands, it’s testament to the indie world’s ongoing interest in Culp. This interest led him to remix The Automatic's Top 5 smash hit Monster, a classic re-reading that annihilated dancefloors around the world.

Culprit 1 has also earned the ringing endorsement of the dance community. His single Tricks was remixed by none other than Paul Hartnoll of Orbital, one of Culp’s childhood heroes. Paul was quickly followed on remix duties by a leading light of the new breed – in-demand breakbeat producer Rogue Element. Incidentally, Culp has already returned the favour for Mr. Hartnoll – his version of Paul’s single Please (featuring Robert Smith of The Cure on vocals) has been released on the Kids label.

The Culprit’s Stateside fanbase has grown quickly following a storming performance at the legendary South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. His live shows have been consistently entertaining ever since his first effort (amusingly filmed for national TV) ended abruptly in a chaotic mess of exploding speakers and overcooked cabling. Culprit 1 recently toured the UK with American experimentalists Subtle, and has also performed alongside electronica buddies Bonobo, Caribou, High Contrast and Mylo.
